Shelf Gets A Make Over

Last week I shared photographs of our cleaned up and tweaked master bathroom!  This room is full of DIY projects.   Some of them were completed during construction six years ago.  I have continued to improve the room a little at a time. There are not many items in the room that I didn’t alter or change up in some fashion.

I decided on the day of the post to hang the shelf above the bathtub.  I stumbled on it when I was in the basement searching for something to put in Al’s corner after using the lady statue to make the lamp

………………………………………………………………………………………………

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I love the look of wall shelves,  I couldn’t resist bringing this one home from a flea market several years ago,  even though I wasn’t sure where to use it.  You all know that I can’t resist a good bargain.

When Alex (oldest daughter) was visiting last summer, she fell in love with it. So, I gave it to her.  While she was here,  she did a decorative finish on it.  She didn’t like the new finish, so she decided not to take it.  So, back into the basement it went.

I didn’t have any luck finding a corner filler for G-Man’s cabinet corner. BUT, I came across the shelf.  I had always liked the finish that Alex had done, however, I was not fond of the leaf pattern on the two rails.

I was having the vision of the shelf in the master bath room.  Yep! The same room that I needed to photograph in a couple of hours!!!  Of course, that didn’t stop me from doing this project.  The image was already in my head.  I had to do it!!!

Waiting patiently in the basement for a good home!

I just plainly did not like this pattern on the rails.

So…

I took them out.  Who knew that they had 2 wooden pegs in each end!!!  That was an unexpected challenge!

I flipped them to the solid side,  reattached them, and gave them a finish to match.

I sanded it all over, especially on the edges,  to distress it a bit more.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I prefer to have a back on wall cabinets as opposed to open backs that reveal the wall behind it.  Now, I needed something to put on the back.  I wanted to use bead board, but I remembered that I had used it on another project.  So,  back I went on a search through the basement for backing ideas.

I have quite a collection of materials for future art projects.  This textured piece has a coordinating mate.   I hated to split them up, but I knew that it would be perfect.  They have been down there for four years.  It was time to use it!!!

It was meant to be.  It fit perfectly with no trimming!

New idea…it needs a towel bar!!!

Back to the basement, AGAIN, to grab a little curtain rod

I Used a drill bit the size of the large end of the rod to drill one end.

On the other end, I screwed on the plastic sleeve from the small end of the rod

(the sleeve had been screwed to the finial for a tight fit into the rod)

I pushed the rod onto the sleeve.  This holds the left end securely.

Since it’s a telescoping rod,  I pushed the large end in until it was flush with the end.

It’s definitely strong enough to hold a bath towel .

But, I chose to display some of my monogrammed towels instead.

I am pleased with the way it turned out.

I placed some of my favorite things there.

That’s my mom and dad (before I came along) in the photograph.

To each hostess of the parties I am linking too…THANKS!!!

It would be great if you would go over to each site and see what each one has to offer. It is really amazing how much talent is out there.  You will be inspired.
